Ceres is the goddess of agriculture, grain, and fertility in Roman mythology. Her counterpart in Greek mythology is Demeter. The most well-known myth of Ceres is the abduction of her daughter Proserpina (Persephone in Greek mythology) by Pluto, the god of the underworld. While searching for her daughter, Ceres traveled across the world, and during this time, plants ceased to grow, and famine struck. Eventually, with the intervention of Jupiter (Zeus in Greek mythology), an agreement was made: Proserpina would spend part of the year with her mother and the rest in the underworld. This myth served as an explanation for the changing seasons.
