Who is Ceres ?
Ceres is the goddess of agriculture, grain, and fertility in Roman mythology. Her counterpart in Greek mythology is Demeter. Ceres played a central role in the lives of farmers and rural communities, ensuring the fertility of the fields and the abundance of harvests. In agrarian societies, the growth and harvest of crops were critical for survival and prosperity, which made the cult of Ceres highly revered.
The most well-known myth of Ceres is the abduction of her daughter Proserpina (Persephone in Greek mythology) by Pluto, the god of the underworld. While searching for her daughter, Ceres traveled across the world, and during this time, plants ceased to grow, and famine struck. Eventually, with the intervention of Jupiter (Zeus in Greek mythology), an agreement was made: Proserpina would spend part of the year with her mother and the rest in the underworld. This myth served as an explanation for the changing seasons.
Ceres was an integral part of Roman society, both in daily life and religious beliefs, symbolizing the connection between humans and nature and the sanctity of agricultural practices.
